Learn about AI

Did your name come up?

If it didn't, here's what just happened. Somewhere out there, a real customer asked the same question. And ChatGPT sent them straight to a competitor.

That's not a hypothetical. It's happening every day, quietly, and most New Zealand businesses have no idea it's going on.

Search doesn't look like search anymore

For years, "getting found online" meant one thing: ranking on Google. You'd type a question, get ten blue links, and click through to compare your options.

That's changing fast. People are now asking ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews the question directly, and getting a straight answer back. No scrolling, no comparing tabs. Just a name.

Most of the time, they don't click through to a source at all. The conversation starts and ends right there in the AI.

If your business is the one it mentions, you've just been introduced to a new customer, and you got there with the kind of credibility a paid ad can't buy. If it's not you, that customer has no idea you were ever an option.

This isn't replacing SEO. It's building on it

Here's the bit that catches people out: AI search isn't a separate thing from SEO. It's the next layer on top of it.

If you're an existing client of ours, everything we've built into your website for search (clear structure, solid content, consistent business details) is still doing its job. That groundwork doesn't disappear. But AI tools read and trust websites a little differently to how Google's search results page works, and there are some specific boxes that need checking for your site to be picked up and cited with confidence.

Think of it like this: SEO got you noticed by the search engines. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation, the AI-search equivalent) is what gets you spoken about by them.

Why this can't wait until next year

It's easy to file this under "future problem." It isn't.

AI Overviews are already showing up on a meaningful and growing share of everyday searches in NZ. ChatGPT alone is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and that number keeps climbing. This behaviour shift isn't coming. It's already reshaping how your customers find their next accountant, tradie, café, or lawyer, right now, this week.

The biggest takeaway is that businesses quietly getting cited as "the answer" today are the ones who'll be very hard to unseat once everyone else catches on.

What we're doing about it

We build websites for search. That's not changing. But we're also making sure the sites we build and manage are structured for how AI search actually reads them, because a beautifully built site that Google loves can still be invisible to ChatGPT if it's missing the signals AI tools look for.

If you're an existing Kōwhai client, keep an eye out, we'll be reaching out directly over the coming weeks to show you exactly where your site stands today, and what it would take to make sure you're the business being recommended, not the one wondering where your enquiries went.

The five-minute test doesn't lie. Go and try it. Then let's talk about what we do with the answer.

If your website lives elsewhere and you've never had it looked at through an AI search lens, we can still tell you where you stand. Get in touch for a quick audit of your site and we'll show you, plainly, whether AI search can currently find and recommend your business, and what's involved in changing that.
